Ausdance VIC is the peak body for dance in Victoria and Australia’s leading dance-specialist

Registered Training Organisation (RTO). For decades, Ausdance VIC has been at the heart of the Victorian dance community, championing independent artists, supporting educators, delivering world-class accredited training, and advocating for the sector at both state and federal levels.

From innovative education projects and workforce development through to policy representation and community engagement, Ausdance VIC exists to nurture and promote the art of dance in all its forms. The organisation serves a diverse membership spanning independent dance artists and teachers, companies and ensembles, and the full education sector from primary schools to tertiary institutions.

1. Position Purpose

The Treasurer is a member of the Board responsible for oversight of the organisation’s financial health, sustainability, and integrity.

The role provides strategic financial guidance to the Board and supports strong governance by ensuring appropriate financial management, reporting, and controls are in place.

The Treasurer does not manage day-to-day finances (this is the responsibility of the Managing Director and staff), but ensures that robust systems, compliance, and financial stewardship are maintained.

2. Key Responsibilities

Financial Governance & Oversight

  • Monitor the financial position and performance of the organisation 
  • Ensure the Board understands the organisation’s financial status and risks 
  • Oversee the development and Board approval of the annual budget 
  • Review and report to members at each Management Committee and general meetings with a written financial statement in a clear and accessible way
  • Ensure appropriate financial controls, policies, and risk management frameworks are in place 

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Contribute to long-term financial strategy and sustainability planning 
  • Support diversification of income streams (e.g. grants, partnerships, earned income) 
  • Provide financial insight into major strategic decisions and investments 

Compliance & Accountability

  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and reporting obligations (including ACNC requirements where applicable) 
  • Oversee preparation and submission of audited financial statements 
  • Liaise with external auditors and ensure audit processes are completed effectively 
  • Ensure appropriate financial record-keeping and transparency 

Board Contribution

  • Actively participate in Board meetings and decision-making 
  • Contribute to governance, risk management, and organisational strategy 
  • Support a culture of accountability, integrity, and good governance 

3. Working Relationships

  • Reports to: Board of Directors (collectively) 
  • Works closely with: Board Chair and Managing Director 
  • Liaises with: External accountants/auditors, and relevant committees

4. Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Financial literacy and the ability to interpret financial statements 
  • Experience in financial management, accounting, audit, or related fields 
  • Understanding of governance responsibilities within a not-for-profit context 
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders

Desirable:

  • CPA/CA qualification or equivalent experience 
  • Experience in the arts, cultural, or not-for-profit sector 
  • Understanding of government funding environments and grant compliance 
  • Experience serving on a Board 

Time Commitment

  • Attendance at Board meetings (6 per year) 
  • Preparation and review of financial materials 
  • Additional time during budget cycles and audit periods
